Separation technology becomes a strategic link between yield and product functionality

Fortifi Food Processing Solutions’ acquisition of SEPAFood Solutions, known through the SEPAmatic brand, brings a less visible but highly consequential technology into focus: raw-material separation. According to SEPAmatic’s announcement, the German company develops and manufactures separation equipment for red meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and is particularly known for low-pressure belt separators. In the meat industry, separation determines which raw-material fractions can be recovered and for which applications they remain suitable. It should therefore not be reduced to a yield issue. Pressure, shear, temperature and raw-material design influence the structure of the recovered material and, consequently, its downstream technological options. In processed meat products, value depends on keeping yield and functionality aligned. The company highlights a patented cooling system included in the acquisition, designed to regulate temperature rise during separation. This is a company claim and does not replace independent validation for individual products. It nevertheless identifies a practical concern: when material warms up, texture, stability and suitability for subsequent processing can change. The transaction expands Fortifi’s portfolio in automation, software and machine learning and complements its existing separation technologies. Its relevance for Europe is not limited to a change in ownership. It also signals that recovery technology, thermal control and raw-material utilisation are being combined within broader food-technology platforms. At plant level, the decisive test remains specific: quality of the separated fraction, hygiene control, cleanability and verifiable performance in each application.
