Meat Export Data Show Why Value, Product Mix and Market Access Must Be Read Together

July data published by the U.S. Meat Export Federation describe an export market that cannot be understood from total volume alone. For beef, year-on-year volume was essentially steady while export value rose 6% to $796.7 million. For pork, both volume and value declined 6%, to 224,305 tonnes and $641.8 million respectively. In beef, Taiwan, Mexico, Japan, the Middle East, Colombia, the Caribbean and ASEAN supported export value. Taiwan took 5,293 tonnes, up 14%, worth $70.6 million, up 38%. Mexico received 18,947 tonnes, up 19%, although the federation warns that a future correction may reclassify part of the reported variety-meat data as muscle cuts. Product-mix interpretation therefore requires caution. Pork illustrates particularly clearly why sanitary access and logistics matter. Restrictions linked to pseudorabies virus, removed in mid-to-late July, affected variety meats in particular. China also caused clearance delays through heightened inspections. Growth in Japan, Central America, Colombia and Canada did not fully offset declines in Mexico, China, South Korea, Oceania and ASEAN. For European buyers and exporters, the signal is clear: value, volume, category and destination need to be assessed together. Markets able to value specific cuts or co-products can protect revenue even when supply is constrained. Conversely, a temporary sanitary barrier or an extra inspection step can quickly reshape both cargo destinations and the composition of exports.
