Chile Makes Origin, Classification and Cut Labelling a Core Consumer-Protection Test

Chile is reinforcing controls under its Meat Law ahead of the Fiestas Patrias holiday period, when meat consumption rises sharply. The Ministry of Agriculture reports that the Agricultural and Livestock Service, SAG, had completed 3,939 inspections by August out of 7,246 scheduled for 2026. It issued 245 infringement notices, equal to 6.2% of inspections carried out. The Meat Law covers origin, classification, grading, labelling, cut designation and product display. According to SAG, the main non-compliances concern information: whether meat is domestic or imported, its classification, its grading and the identification of the cut. In other words, enforcement is not limited to the meat’s physical condition; it also checks whether the commercial identity offered to customers matches the product. The intensified supervision is particularly relevant before the 18 September celebrations, when sales rise in butcher shops and other outlets. The ministry presented it as chain-wide control and linked traceability, quality and food safety. The Metropolitan, Los Lagos and Valparaíso regions accounted for the largest shares of recorded notices. The lesson is transferable: transparency on origin and cuts is an operational task, not merely a communication issue. It requires records, product segregation, consistent labelling and staff able to explain the offer. For specialist retail, visible traceability also safeguards the value of a counter recommendation. If identification fails, even properly stored meat can lose consumer trust and commercial value.
