British export growth underlines the value of market-specific carcass utilisation

British red-meat exports reached a value of £1.1 billion in the first half of 2026, up 15% year on year. Volume rose by 8% to almost 293,000 tonnes. HMRC figures released by AHDB show growth in all three main categories: beef exports increased in value by 23% to £450 million, sheep meat by 15% to £401 million, and pig meat by 5% to £267 million. The meaningful point is not the headline total alone. According to AHDB, demand from European markets was particularly important for beef and sheep meat shipments. In pig meat, the higher export value confirms that overseas markets remain part of carcass value recovery even when the international trading environment is demanding. The data do not show the contribution of individual cuts, processing levels or destinations, so they cannot on their own establish product-by-product profitability. The implication for businesses is nevertheless specific: exporting is not the same as moving surplus. A broad market portfolio makes it possible to direct cuts, fats, offal and processed products into different uses and specifications, reducing dependence on a small number of buyers or on one domestic outlet. That requires production planning, veterinary approval, cutting formats, labelling and logistics to be designed for several markets from the outset. The first-half result is a positive signal, not a guarantee for the remainder of the year. Its strategic value lies in the reminder that domestic prices and whole-carcass utilisation are connected to the ability to retain market access, commercial relationships and export-ready specifications.
