Feed additives must prove meat-quality effects across the whole system

Functional feed additives for cattle should be assessed as process hypotheses, not as universal solutions. A Chinese Academy of Sciences paper published on 15 September examined a preparation combining Chinese herbal components and microorganisms in Simmental cattle. Over 120 days, the experimental group received the preparation at 1% of dietary dry matter, while the control group received the basal diet. According to the authors, supplemented cattle had higher dry-matter intake, higher average daily gain and greater crude-fat digestibility. They also recorded lower shear force in the longissimus dorsi, lower cooking loss, and changes in muscle amino acids, serum parameters and rumen microbiota. These findings describe an effect under the trial’s specific conditions; they do not demonstrate that the mixture will transfer to other rations, breeds, production systems or regulatory settings. Its relevance to the meat chain lies in the verification design. Meat quality cannot be inferred from a single growth measure. The study assesses performance, digestibility, metabolic status, rumen measurements and technological meat variables together. This is more useful than a generic promise of “better quality” because it indicates where effects might occur and which variables need monitoring before practical application. For on-farm and plant-level assessment, decisive questions remain: preparation stability, costs, ingredient authorisation, repeatability between batches, effects on colour, tenderness and yield under commercial conditions, and sensory acceptance. The lesson is not to replace one formulation with another, but to require that any feeding intervention claiming to improve meat connects animal biology with verifiable carcass and product data.
