Calf registrations make future beef availability a procurement issue today

Calf-registration data are not an immediate slaughter forecast, but they reveal the direction of supply well in advance. AHDB’s analysis published on 11 September shows a mixed picture for Great Britain. The year-on-year decline in female beef cattle aged over 30 months—an approximate indicator of the suckler herd—slowed to 1.3% in July. AHDB interprets this as a possible stabilisation of contraction, not evidence that herd rebuilding has begun.
