Hybrid rye turns feed formulation into a verifiable meat-quality variable

Hybrid rye is moving from a regional alternative to a raw material that deserves clear specifications in pig production. Teagasc reports that Ireland’s winter-rye area for 2026 is projected at 5,000 hectares—more than ten times the 2020 area. Yield potential, lower input needs and stronger disease resistance are driving that growth. For the meat chain, however, the key question is not simply whether imported cereals can be replaced, but what such replacement means for the animal, the carcass and the meat.
