Drought Exemptions Turn Feed Resilience Into a Quality Issue

Drought is forcing a tightly controlled review of some production rules for French origin-labelled and organic systems. On August 25, INAO reported that more than 400 individual derogations had been granted to around 4,000 organic dairy farms. In justified cases, they permit limited use of non-organic feed where forage-production losses result from exceptional climatic conditions.

Although the notice primarily concerns dairy, the signal matters for all ruminant production, including beef. When pasture does not regrow and winter forage reserves are used early, feed supply quickly becomes an issue of animal welfare, performance and economic stability. The exemption does not remove specification requirements: every application must be substantiated, assessed and authorised.

For meat programmes built around origin, feeding claims or organic production, managing exemptions needs particular care. Continuity of production must not become a loss of product identity. That is why documentation of ration changes and precise communication within the supply chain matter.
