Cultivated meat is not a zero-contact technology in animal ethics

The phrase “animal-free” oversimplifies the debate around cultivated meat. An agricultural and environmental ethics article published on 26 September points out that current cell-based production does not begin in a bioreactor. It is preceded by the selection, breeding, management, restraint and cell collection of donor animals. The author therefore argues that the animal question must be assessed as part of the production system rather than disappearing behind terminology.
