Heat-stress management must prove its value in the meat, not only in the barn

A study published on 25 August addresses a technical issue that becomes more important as temperatures rise: protecting broiler performance and meat quality under cyclic heat stress. The authors tested an ethanolic extract from Romanesco cauliflower leaves in the drinking water of Ross 308 broilers. The design was limited and should be read accordingly. It involved 240 day-old chicks, assigned to a control and three concentrations—200, 400 and 600 mg dry matter per litre—with five replicates of 12 birds. For 13 days, birds were exposed to 34 ± 1°C for eight hours daily; sampling took place on day 35. Under those conditions, 400 mg/L produced the best reported results: higher final weight and gain, improved feed conversion and lower mortality. Carcase and breast yield improved as well. For technological quality, the study reports lower cooking loss, lower shear force and lower breast-meat lipid oxidation during three months of frozen storage at −18°C, alongside higher sensory acceptance. The practical implication is not an immediate additive recommendation. Rather, the study shows why heat-stress measures must be assessed through to the final product: yield, texture, cooking loss, oxidative stability and sensory response. Validation across farms, diets, climates and regulatory settings remains necessary. Still, the underlying principle is robust: an intervention that works in the house must also demonstrate what it delivers in the meat.
