Spanish beef export growth shows that international value depends on whole-carcass market work

Spain’s beef interprofessional organisation, PROVACUNO, received the 2026 Alimentos de España award for food internationalisation on 14 October. The award from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food recognises the organisation’s strategy for opening and consolidating overseas markets, developed together with companies and public authorities. PROVACUNO reports exports of more than 230,000 tonnes worth €1.75 billion in 2025, compared with 196,000 tonnes worth €693 million in 2017. The comparison shows that internationalisation is not merely about moving more volume: reported value increased more strongly than tonnage. Nevertheless, aggregate growth does not by itself prove a uniform margin improvement for every company, category or destination. The organisation cites work in markets including Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Qatar, Canada, Egypt, Kuwait, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Portugal, Italy and France remain major destinations. Algeria is gaining relevance for beef, while Côte d’Ivoire is becoming more important for offal products—an indication that export value depends on finding outlets for more parts of the carcass. The industry lesson is that market opening does not end with a sanitary protocol. It requires trained export managers, adapted presentations, documented requirements, promotion and sustained commercial relationships. Internationalisation becomes resilient when cut specifications, quality, certification and culinary use are converted into a repeatable customer portfolio—not when the work stops at celebrating an approval or annual figure.
