Meat forecasts become useful only when translated into cut-level decisions

USDA ERS’s October outlook again brings together forecasts for beef, pork, lamb, poultry, eggs and international markets. Its value is not a single number but its method: it combines animal supply, feed costs, trade, consumption and the month-to-month changes reported in WASDE.

That approach matters for buying, fabrication and sales. Meat availability is not determined by herd size, live-animal prices or total production alone. Carcass weights, slaughter pace, cut yields, inventories, export destinations and consumers’ ability to substitute proteins and meal formats also matter.

The report also underlines that beef, pork, lamb and chicken do not respond in the same way. A positive or negative signal in one category may redirect demand to another, but it does not automatically predict every cut or every sales channel.
