Protein supply is not the same thing as meat consumption

Defra’s new experimental statistic estimates the nutrient contribution of UK agricultural production before processing and waste. For 2025 it puts supply at the equivalent of 101% of the population’s energy requirement and about 193% of its protein requirement. Livestock products account for 31% of the calculated energy supply and a central share of protein availability.

However, the publication carefully defines its limits. It does not measure actual consumption, full food security, adherence to dietary recommendations or commercial self-sufficiency. Nor does it include compositional changes from processing, losses, imports, imported feed inputs or household purchasing decisions.

That distinction is particularly important in meat communication. Nutritional availability from domestic production does not itself show what people eat, which cuts they buy or whether a specific diet meets public-health guidance. Combining these questions creates simple headlines but weak analysis.
