Consumer trust begins where the meat chain becomes visible

Knowledge about meat gains credibility when it makes the full chain visible rather than merely repeating promotional messages. Spain’s “Detectives de la Carne” programme takes pupils in the third to fifth years of primary school to Mercamadrid’s Central Meat Market to learn about livestock farming and the production of beef and sheep meat.

According to PROVACUNO, the visit lasts around three hours and combines observation, challenges and group activities. Pupils follow food from the farm to the point of sale and meet the professionals involved. The initiative has operated since 2017 and reaches more than 1,000 schoolchildren each year. It is not a tasting format: it places the product in its production, commercial and social context.

For consumer communication, this approach is more robust than information focused solely on individual attributes. Origin, farming, processing, distribution, nutrition and professional work appear as elements of one system. The programme also addresses rural areas, the role of grazing in open landscapes and biodiversity, and wildfire prevention. Such aspects always require context; they do not automatically make every product sustainable.
