Premium meat communication needs to separate sensory proof from origin claims

France is preparing a new communication phase for beef, veal, lamb and pork carrying the Label Rouge and PGI designations. A call published on October 26 by Interbev, FIL Rouge and SYLAPORC seeks an agency to develop the programme for 2027, 2028 and 2029. The initiative includes communication around Concours Général Agricole awards, the Trophée National des Viandes d’excellence and the annual November fortnight dedicated to quality and origin.

It is important to distinguish what the two signs certify. Label Rouge is presented as a promise of superior quality that must be supported by organoleptic tests of taste, tenderness and enjoyment. A PGI, by contrast, connects a product with territory, history and professional know-how. The labels are not interchangeable: one centres on a verifiable quality promise; the other on protected origin and the associated product typicity.

The call also stresses specifications, demanding practices and regular controls carried out by independent certification bodies. This matters for counter service and foodservice communication: origin, animal welfare, environmental performance and sensory quality should not be offered as generic claims, but as elements requiring understandable translation and documentary proof appropriate to each designation.
