H5N1 in Indiana dairy cattle makes shared biosecurity interfaces operationally visible

The confirmation of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in an Indiana dairy herd does not change, according to APHIS, the safety of the commercial pasteurised milk supply or the U.S. eradication strategy. It does, however, underline that biosecurity must be understood as an interface discipline involving species, people, vehicles, equipment and animal movements. The November 2 detection was Indiana’s first reported cattle case and arose from routine National Milk Testing Strategy testing, not pre-movement surveillance.
