France’s producer-price data show why species must be calculated separately

On August 27, Insee reported that French producer prices for animals fell again in July 2026 compared with June, by 1.6%, following a 1.4% decline in the preceding month. Within that aggregate, however, movements differed sharply. Pig prices rose by 0.8% after a 0.6% fall, while poultry prices increased by 1.6% following a 0.1% rise. Insee attributes the rebound in pig prices to limited supply. That wording matters: it describes an observed movement in the French market and does not, by itself, establish farm profitability, cutting costs or consumer prices. Those conclusions would require additional information, including feed and energy costs, weights, carcass yields, cut mix and marketing conditions. The divergence between animal groups is also a warning for purchasing and assortment planning. An average for “animal prices” can conceal opposing signals for pork and poultry. In practical terms, businesses should examine raw-material contracts, cut availability and promotional activity by species instead of applying a broad market trend across all proteins. For meat retail and the butcher’s trade, the release reinforces the need for calculations by species and product. Farm-gate movements pass through the chain with delays and unevenly. Sound price communication should distinguish between live-animal quotation, carcass value, cut price and selling price. Only then can it avoid attributing consumer effects that the published data do not yet demonstrate.
