Deforestation-free beef turns traceability from paperwork into market access

The third Expo Carnes in Santa Fe, held on 25 September, placed one commercial requirement at the centre of the discussion: more sophisticated markets are asking not only for physical product quality, but also for verifiable information on origin, traceability, animal welfare and environmental conditions. The event brought together beef, pork and poultry chains with themes including process technology, carbon footprint, welfare and climate adaptation. The most concrete issue was environmental traceability for deforestation-free beef. According to presentations by representatives of Argentina’s beef-promotion institute, the forthcoming European requirement will need digital information demonstrating that animals have moved, from birth through slaughter, only through establishments meeting the applicable conditions. Environmental traceability will need to connect with health records and animal-movement documentation. The discussion avoids a common simplification. An origin claim or a final slaughter-plant certificate cannot by itself reconstruct an animal’s entire production life. For data to be usable in international procurement, animal or lot identity, farms, movements, health documents and territorial information must be linkable. The value lies in continuity and verifiability of information, not in accumulating labels. Expo Carnes also presented the developing Santa Fe Produce Sustentable platform, designed to assign a deforestation-free attribute using public information, initially for animal proteins and especially extensive cattle production. For European meat businesses, the signal is clear: procurement specifications should now define which digital evidence is accepted and how data gaps are dealt with. Traceability is moving from a filing obligation to a market-access and commercial function.
