AI freshness systems need biological reference data before they can make reliable meat decisions
Artificial-intelligence systems for assessing meat freshness should not be judged by a single laboratory accuracy figure. A review published in *Food Bioscience* argues that industrial value depends on linking sensor signals to meaningful biological and chemical markers—and on a model continuing to work beyond the sample series on which it was trained.
September’s global meat-price decline was driven by poultry and pork, not every species
The FAO Meat Price Index averaged 127.9 points in September 2026. That was 1.5 points, or 1.1%, below the revised August reading and in line with September 2025. It is not a purchasing quotation for a particular species, cut or country, but a weighted indicator based on international export-price movements across meat groups.
Poultry trade clearance now depends on the authorised zone, not the exporting country alone
The European Commission has urgently amended the lists of zones authorised or suspended for entry into the Union of fresh poultry meat, game-bird meat and poultry germinal products from Canada and the United States. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/2227 of 1 October combines new suspensions following highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks with reauthorisation of certain US zones.
Small processors create value when funding connects farm origin, product design and market access
USDA Rural Development has awarded Farm Creek Meats in Duchesne, Utah, a USD 200,000 Value-Added Producer Grant. The family-owned company processes meat and is vertically integrated as a producer. According to the agency, the working-capital funding will expand its range, support production capacity, develop markets and strengthen its retail presence.
EU livestock policy links welfare investment, feed protein and market access into one meat-chain task
AHDB’s new explanation of the European Union livestock strategy and protein plan shifts attention from isolated targets to a production system. For the meat sector, the issue is not merely which welfare or environmental requirements are proposed, but how they will be financed, measured and translated into competitive and trade conditions.
