AI becomes a documented preliminary finding in official meat inspection
Official meat inspection is entering a phase in which machine-vision systems can provide systematic preliminary findings. At Westfleisch’s Oer-Erkenschwick plant, the “ArtificialVet” pilot project has used six high-performance cameras since December 2025 to capture the closed pig carcass. The system supplies digital preliminary findings to official inspection personnel; it does not replace the veterinary decision.
Antimicrobial evidence becomes the market-access test for Brazilian beef
From 3 September 2026, European requirements on the use of certain antimicrobials will be explicitly linked to market access for certain animals and foods of animal origin from third countries. According to Fleisch & Co, Brazil has not yet provided the guarantees required for beef. This is not about an analytical result from an individual consignment, but about binding proof that EU restrictions are met throughout the supply chain serving Europe.
The QS/ITW organic pilot makes segregation and mass balance operational
QS and Initiative Tierwohl have launched a pilot project allowing organic meat to be used in QS- and ITW-declared meat products and meat preparations. The initiative aims to open marketing routes for organic raw materials within both systems and develop them jointly with organic farming associations. For processors, the change matters because it connects two assurance logics that have so far been organised separately.
Beef demand remains a price factor even when retail prices rise
The U.S. beef market shows that consumer prices cannot be explained by tight supply alone. An analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City states that demand for many beef products has continued to rise despite seven consecutive years of higher retail prices. Since 2020, retail prices for ribeye and ground beef have increased by nearly 50 and 60 percent respectively, while pork chops and chicken breast have remained relatively more stable.
Listeria compliance shifts shelf-life validation to the centre of meat hygiene
Hygiene is again at the centre of the meat industry’s technical agenda because new obligations for Listeria monocytogenes in certain ready-to-eat foods have applied since 1 July 2026. The Forum der Fleischwirtschaft, taking place in Quakenbrück on 1 and 2 September, places this topic at the heart of its programme. The practical issue is proving product safety throughout shelf life, not merely at the point of production.
