Chicken availability becomes visible through formats, not the species total
Weekly chicken advertising in US retail shows that commercial availability should be read by product format, not just by species. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service report published on October 30 tracks promotions at major grocery outlets for the period from October 24 to November 5.
The feature rate increased 5.3% from the previous week and the activity index rose 23.3%. Whole birds, IQF products, ground chicken, prepared items, deli products and variety meats gained advertising space, while parts declined. Parts and prepared items nevertheless remained the most frequently featured chicken categories.
The data distinguish product attributes and commercial states. For fresh conventional bagged whole fryers, the weighted average advertised price was US$1.07 per pound, compared with US$1.41 in the prior week. These figures are neither wholesale quotations nor the effective price paid in every transaction: they reflect promotional prices and the advertising space retailers assigned to each item.
