BBQ safety includes the electrical integrity of the grill, not only food hygiene

Safety around a grill begins before meat reaches the grate. Health Canada has issued a recall for certain Char-Broil Bistro Pro Electric Grill + Charcoal Mode units. It covers appliances made between October and December 2025, identified by SKU 25302177, UPC 099143021775 and date codes 2510, 2511 or 2512. The authority advises users to stop using the units immediately and request a free repair kit. The reason is technical: the heating element’s grounding wire can disconnect and lose fault protection, creating a potential electric-shock hazard. Health Canada states that, as of August 26, 2026, no incidents or injuries had been reported in Canada or the United States. The recall nevertheless covers 342 units sold in Canada and 10,605 in the United States. It is not a food-safety alert and does not concern a defect in meat. For professional BBQ operations, that distinction matters. Food hygiene and equipment safety are separate disciplines, yet they meet in the same service. An operation that plans cooking temperatures, raw-to-cooked separation and cleaning should also build equipment identification, electrical checks and repair documentation into its operating routine. The practical recommendation for caterers, grilling schools, demonstrations and mobile operators is simple: check model, date code and modifications before every season or event. If a unit is affected, it should not remain in service while awaiting an informal repair. In an environment of fire, fat, moisture and frequent staff changes, the electrical condition of the grill is part of safe operation, even though it does not alter the sensory profile of the barbecue.
