A tariff quota turns lean beef trimmings into a strategic raw material
The White House has temporarily expanded the U.S. tariff-rate quota for lean beef trimmings by 300,000 metric tons. Signed on August 26, the action applies solely to trimmings suitable for blending into ground beef and follows an 80,000-tonne increase allocated to Argentina in February. For the trade, this is not a broad opening of the beef market; it is a targeted intervention in the raw material base for hamburgers and other ground-beef products.
Chile’s beef chain is separating production, sourcing and export roles
Chile’s new official beef bulletin points to a diverging market development: in the first half of 2026, both cattle slaughter and beef production fell compared with the same period of 2025. At the same time, exports and imports increased. For a supply chain that is small alongside South America’s major exporting countries, this combination matters: domestic production, sourcing and trade orientation are moving in different directions.
Organic certification does not replace animal-based welfare evidence
“Organic” is not, by itself, a sufficient welfare indicator. That is the central finding of a systematic review published on August 25 in *Organic Agriculture*. The team analysed 86 comparative studies from commercial farms in Europe and North America, published between 1990 and June 2023, covering 623 comparison pairs between organic and conventional systems in cattle, pigs, poultry and small ruminants.
Computer vision is moving pig welfare monitoring from pens to individuals
Pig-welfare monitoring is often constrained by a practical contradiction: large groups are easy to film, but individual animals are difficult to follow reliably. A study published on August 24 in *Scientific Reports* introduces an open-source computer-vision pipeline intended to address that problem. The system combines animal detection, trajectory association and re-identification to analyse the behaviour of group-housed pigs at individual level.
Poultry operations are treating welfare and biosecurity as one management task
Poultry production increasingly connects issues that were long treated separately: flock health, biosecurity, handling, welfare, efficiency and staff training.
